I decided to create a detailed piece using Unreal Engine. This piece would be a fantasy/magic based medieval street, with a city wall, and gate house at one end, dividing further areas of a city. A magic school would also be added to one side, across from a bazaar inspired area. Housing and other buildings would be present to build up the area as needed. The main focus of this piece would be the walls, school and bazaar.
I added some references for lighting as well, just to get an idea for the over all theming, around the golden hour of photography, with a few mid day references as well.
After watching Polygon Academy's video series, showing their process for an Artstation challenge, I added a Quality reference section to the PureRef scene, with some screenshots of games I hope to emulate for lighting, and atmosphere.
I decided to blog this work in hopefully weekly blogs, showing any progress made, and any changes. I begin with 2 sketches based on the idea, before choosing the lower sketch, with the off-centred gatehouse.
From there I created a rough block out in Blender, before importing it into Unreal.
From there I created the city walls, and gate house in Blender, creating a Portcullis, Gate, and Machicolations on top of the wall and gate house. After importing these into Unreal, and fixing any normal issues, and door swing obstacles, I created a block that could be inserted to unwanted Gatehouse entrances to block it off. The Gatehouses have the entrance on all four sides, for any configuration required for the entrance way.
